THE DESIGN PROCESS

THE LESSON MISSION

Picture

I can carry out the design process using a variety of technology tools to design, develop, and market an invention or innovation.

THE MISSION

Picture
In this mission, you will collaborate in groups and use technology tools, as people do in the real world, to create, develop, and market an invention or innovation.  There are eight challenges that you must complete to accomplish your mission.  Each challenge will take you through a step of the design process and introduce you to a new type of technology.
Picture
Before we begin, let's take a minute to go over some terms.  First of all, the design process is an approach for breaking down a large project into manageable chunks.  Architects, engineers, scientists, and other thinkers use the design process to solve a variety of problems.  So in this activity, you will use the design process to create an invention or develop an innovation.

You might be asking yourself, "So what is the difference in an invention and an innovation?"  An
invention is an item, idea, or strategy introduced to people for the first time.  An innovation is an improvement upon an item, idea, or strategy that has already been invented.

Picture
You will collaborate with your groups to develop and market your invention or innovation.  Collaboration is working with another person or group of people to create, produce, or achieve something.

So, you will work with a group to create or develop an invention or innovation and then you will work together to market it.  When a company markets a product, it is advertising or promoting the product.

A LITTLE HOUSEKEEPING FIRST

Jobs
Each group will have four group members.  Some groups may have one more or one less.  You need to take a moment to decide who will hold each of the following jobs.  If you have three people in your group, one person can take two jobs or each of you can take turns doing the fourth job.  If you have five people in your group, two people can alternate doing one of the jobs or you could rotate the jobs each week so that everyone gets a turn doing each job.  If your group has two people who want to do a job, raise your hand.  I will roll the dice to see who will be the person who does the job.
Recorder
The Recorder does the writing for the group and writes everyone's ideas in the activity packets.
Speaker
The Speaker does all the talking for the group.  The speaker presents the group's ideas to the class.
Time Keeper
The Time Keeper watches the clock on assignments and keeps the group on task.  Time keepers warn the group when time is low and when they are off subject.
Picture
Courier
The Courier runs all the errands for the group.  If the group needs a representative to spin, get supplies, or ask questions, the Courier does it.
Google Classroom
You will be doing a lot of work in small groups and you will be maintaining a group portfolio of your design process.  Your portfolio will be kept on Google Classroom.  So, we need to get your Google Classrooms set up for Technology Class.  Follow the instructions below to get Google Classroom set up.

Step 1:   Click on the icon below to go straight to Google.

THE PROCESS

Each week, we will tackle one step of the design process.  Some steps may take two or more weeks.  Click on the process below to participate in that process.  When it whole process is complete, you will have an new invention and a whole portfolio demonstrating your tech expertise!  All the challenges in the lesson are also available under the tool box.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

Yes!

You can now use technology tools to create and market an invention or innovation.  Share your portfolio and your invention with your family so that they can ooooooo and ahahahaha about how incredible you are!
