LESSON 1:  CAUSES OF WORLD WAR I

UNIT MISSION

As we begin the unit, it is important to know what is expected of you.  The following multifaceted question is the essential question of the unit.  It is what you must be able to answer to meet the unit mission.  Each lesson will have targets that you must meet.  These targets are the components of the unit.  You will use all the targets at the end of the unit to answer the essential question and accomplish the unit mission.

What was World War I?  What caused it?  Who was involved?  How was it fought?  Why did America stay out of the war at first but later join? How was it fought in battle and at home?  How did the war end?  What were the immediate, short term, and long term impacts?

LESSON TARGETS

1.)  I can define nationalism and describe how nationalism led to World War I.

2.)   I can define imperialism and describe how the desire for imperialism played a part in sparking World War I.

3.)  I can define militarism and describe the acts of militarism that led to World War I. 

4.) I can define alliances and describe how alliances led to World War I.

5.)  I can define assassination and describe the assassination that sparked World War I.

6.)  I can define crises and describe major crises that led to World War I.

7.)  I can define self-interest and explain how self-interest was the root of all the things that caused World War I.

8.)  I can explain how militarism, alliances, nationalism, imperialism, the assassination, crises, and self-interest all came together to cause World War I.


VIRTUAL CENTERS INSTRUCTIONS 

You will participate in one virtual center each day with your small group.  First, you will read about the topic.  Secondly, you will complete the center page in your lesson chronicles with your group.  Third, you will complete an activity with your small group that will help you understand more about the topic of the center.  Finally, you will complete the center check on your own.

Important Terms

alliance:  an agreement between nations to work together for a common goal or to defend each other in the event of war
​
assassination:  Killing a famous or important person usually for political reasons

crises: difficult or dangerous situations in which a decision must be made quickly and the result of the decision has heavy consequences
​
imperialism:  when a nation takes over another nation to rule them and take their natural resources

militarism:  building up and maintaining a strong, well equipped military in order to defend, gain power, or achieve goals

nationalism:  feeling loyal and proud of your nation and believing your nation is better and more important than other nations

self-interest: concern only for getting what you want or need and not about what happens to other people


MISSION CHECK

You completed a target check at the end of each center.  Now, you need to complete the Lesson Mission Check.  In this activity, you will check to see if you understand all the major concepts of each center.  The Lesson Mission Check will also check to see if you understand how all of the centers relate to each other.  In other words, it will assess whether or not you understand how all of these things came together and sparked World War I.  To take the Lesson 1 Mission Check, click on the icon with your homeroom name below.
