TOPIC 7 AMAZING RACE!

WHY THEY WENT WEST - AMAZING RACE

Are you ready for the AMAZING RACE?  This race will be a three day race that will cover Topic 7 - Why They Went West!  Some of challenges of the race will be review.  Some challenges will cover new things.  Other challenges will require you to apply information you have learned.  Still more challenges will require you to create things with what you have learned.  Remember, all group members must participate!  This will be the most intense AMAZING RACE yet!!!!  Are you ready?

THE TEAMS

TABLES
Remember the people that sit at your table are your team members.  Your group number is the name of your team!  All team members must participate for credit.  Remember, I am watching you and your participation in the race is a grade!

JOBS
Each team will decide on who will do each of the following jobs:
1.  Group Reader:

  • The group reader opens the challenge and reads it to the group.
2.  Group Writer:
  • The group writer, writes the information on the Challenge sheets.
3.  Group Runner:
  • The group runner is the only person in the group allowed to bring the Challenge sheet to the teacher at the podium.
4.  Group Ref:
  • The group ref settles any disagreements and conducts a vote whenever the group does not agree.
5.  Group Tech:
  • The group tech submits any computer challenges on their computer and issues research assignments to each group member.
  • If there are only 4 people in the group, the group ref will perform the duties of group ref and group tech.
EVERYONE RESEARCHES EXCEPT THE GROUP WRITER.  THE GROUP WRITER MAY RESEARCH IF THEY WANT TO BUT THEY MUST BE READY TO FILL IN THE ANSWERS ON THE CHALLENGE SHEETS FOR THE GROUP.

GAME INSTRUCTIONS

Remember how the Amazing Race is Played:
1.  I will give each group reader Challenge 1.  DO NOT OPEN THE CHALLENGE UNTIL YOU ARE TOLD TO DO SO!
2.  When I say, "You may start, NOW,"  the group reader will read Challenge 1 to the group and then hand the
     challenge to the group tech.
3.  The group tech decides how the group will divide up jobs to complete the challenge and gives the challenge

     paper to the group writer.
4.  The group writer FIRST writes the group name and all group members' names at the top of the challenge.  They

also write what each member was responsible for doing to complete the challenge.
5.  Each group member does researches or completes their job assigned by the group tech and then reports their
     answer to the group writer.
6.  When the group has completed the challenge, the group runner will quickly bring the challenge sheet to the
teacher podium.  NEW RULE:  If you run or push, I will send you to the end of the line and take your challenge
sheet last in the line of people at the podium.
7.  If your team's challenge sheet is correct, I will hand the next challenge to the group runner and your group may
immediately open it and begin Challenge 2 using the same procedure as above.
8.  If your team's challenge sheet is incorrect, I will shake my head no and hand the challenge sheet back to the
group runner for your group to correct.   Simply cross out or erase the incorrect answers and rewrite the correct
answers.  Once your group feels that they have corrected any incorrect answers, the group runner will return to
     the podium.
9.  Again, if the answer is correct, I will give you the next challenge.  If it is still incorrect, I will send the runner back
again.  You will not get any hints!  You will go back every time the sheet is incorrect until it comes back to me
     correct.
10.  The game does not end until every group has completed the race.  This means all groups must complete all of
        the challenges.
11.  The winner is the first group to complete all the challenges in the race.  I will post each groups' place on the
        board and online.
12.  The first place winner of each class gets the trophy over their table until the next AMAZING RACE.
13.  If you participate in the race with your team and finish the race with your team, regardless of what place you
come in, you receive a 100/A+ for the activity.
REMEMBER, THE GOAL IS TO COMPLETE THE RACE - YOUR PLACE IN THE RACE IS JUST FOR FUN!

THE RULES

Recall the Rules of the AMAZING RACE:
1.  You may not talk to other teams.  Doing so will result in a 5 point deduction in your Amazing Race Score/Grade!
2.  You may not give answers to other teams even in other classes!  Doing so will result in a 25 point deduction in
     your Amazing Race Score/Grade!
3.  You may not run or push to be first at the podium.  Doing so will result in a 5 point deduction in your Amazing
     Race Score/Grade!
4.  You may not override the authority of any group members' job positions.  For example:  the group writer can't
say, "I'm going to run the challenge to the podium."  OR  the group reader can't say, "I'll decide what the group
will write without allowing the ref to hold a vote."   Doing so will result in a 5 point deduction in your Amazing
     Race Score/Grade!
5.  You may not cut in line at the podium.  Doing so will result in a 5 point deduction in your Amazing Race
     Score/Grade!
6.  You may not look at/copy other teams' answers.  Doing so will result in a 25 point deduction in your Amazing
     Race Score/Grade!
7.  You may not scream or yell.  Doing so will result in a 5 point deduction in your Amazing Race Score/Grade!
8.  You may not be a bad sport.  For example:  "They're cheating."  OR They're only winning because they're the
nerds."   OR, "We're losing because of you!"  etc....  Doing so will result in a 10 point deduction in your Amazing
     Race Score/Grade!
9.  You must participate.  If your group complains that you are not helping or I notice it to be a problem, it will
result in a 25 point deduction in your Amazing Race Score/Grade!
10.  If you are absent during the Amazing Race, you must ask for the notes on what you missed and you will have
to take a brief quiz the next day during P.E. or lunch to catch up.  If you make a C or better, no points will be
deducted for participation.  If you make below a C, you may retake it the next day, and I will average your
scores, or you can opt to take the grade.  This grade will be averaged to your daily AMAZING RACE GRADE.
11.  You may not go to any other sites than the ones provided for you to help you with each challenge.  Doing so
will result in a 25 point deduction in your Amazing Race Score/Grade!
12.  You may not be on any other challenge icons than the one you are working on.  For example:  If your group is
on Challenge 3, you may not be on the Challenge 6 page.   Doing so will result in a 15 point deduction in your
       Amazing Race Score/Grade!

YOUR SCORE OR GRADE

When your team completes the race, you have a 100/A+ for the assignment unless you have deductions.  If you do have deductions, I add them together and subtract them from your 100 and this is your score.  So as long as you follow the rules and complete the race - whether you are in first place or last place - your grade is 100/A+
