TOPIC 1 - INDUSTRIALIZATION

Topic Overview Lesson

LESSON MISSION

Picture
This lesson mission is your goal for the day.  It is what you (the student) will be able to do when the lesson is over.

I can define Industrialization and list the major factors that led to U.S. industrialization in the Gilded Age.

LESSON READING

The Industrialization Component

Picture
Industrialization is when the people of a country move away from farming as their main way of making money and begin manufacturing goods and services as their main way of making money.  In the United States, there were many factors that led to industrialization.  It started with an abundance of natural resources and it was all about solving problems to grow a bigger and better nation.

U.S. industrialization is the first of the eight major "component gear wheels" that made up the Gilded Age.  There were eight major issues and events that were the "teeth and groves" of the industrialization gear wheel.  These were the factory system, natural resources, connecting the nation, new technology, changes in production, new industries, big business, and industrialists.

WHOLE GROUP ACTIVITY

Video Snippet

To get an idea about the factors involved in U.S. Industrialization, we will watch the following video as a class by the History Channel called, The Industrial Revolution.  We will all watch it together on the t.v., but I have embedded it here for anyone absent or if you want to watch it again at home.

SMALL GROUP ACTIVITY

Making Predictions

Look at the diagram below of the "Industrialization Gear Wheel".  As a small group look at each tooth of the wheel.  What do predict each of these "Factor Teeth" will cover?  As a group, discuss what you think.  Everyone must predict something different.  One member in each group needs to submit the group's answers on the survey below the picture of the gear wheel.  As a class, we will look at every groups' predictions when every group is done.
