What Is Renaissance Learning?
Renaissance Learning is a computer program used to assess and monitor students' reading progress. Students take an initial multiple-choice reading assessment so that teachers can determine a baseline reading level. Reading levels are measured by average grade level skills. For example, if an assessment reveals the child's reading level is 3.6. This means the student's reading skills are typical of a third grader in the sixth month of school. If a sixth grader has a reading level of 3.6, this means that their reading level is well below the average sixth grader. On the other end of the spectrum, if a sixth grader has a reading level of 8.2, this means that they are well above the average sixth grader.
After the assessment, students use a reading system called Accelerated Reader that is designed to help the student increase their reading level gradually and with minimal frustration. With the accelerated reader system, students choose books to read using the AR Bookfinder that are in a reading level range. This range of books is within their zone of proximal development, which means they are reading books that are just challenging enough to help them grow but not so challenging that they become frustrated. When the student completes the book, he or she takes a short multiple-choice quiz online. After a student has read in this level and scored well on quizzes in this level, they take another assessment with Renaissance Learning to see if their reading level increased. If so, then the student will be given a new, slightly higher reading level range and will select books in the higher range to read.
It is important to understand that the Accelerated Reader system is not a method of instruction, but a strategy for encouraging independent reading that leads to natural reading development. After all, if you don't practice a skill, you never develop it. Though students are given independent reading time in school, but times, independent reading will be assigned as homework.
