WWI Speed Match -
Strategies and Tactics Used in World War I

Welcome to WWI Strategies and Tactics Speed Match!
In this activity, you will work with your small groups to compete in categorizing the strategies and tactics used in World War I.  Your goal is to use the icons below to read about the different strategies and tactics used in fighting World War I and categorize them into the three major types of Warfare - Ground, Air, or Sea.  At the end of the game, you will create the game chart in your portfolio under the Challenge 3 section and fill in the answers.  Everyone fills this out even though your group will play together. You may do this during the game, but since the game requires you to be speedy to win, you may wait until the end to copy it into your portfolio.

Instructions:
  • To play, each team will have a game card like the one below.  When I say go, you will click on box 1 of the game board below and read about the war strategy or tactic.
  • As a team, you must decide whether the strategy or tactic is a type of ground warfare, aerial warfare, naval warfare, two of these, or all of these.
  • Your team will write the strategy or tactic in the first column of the game card under strategy or tactic.
  • In the small box under Ground, Air, and Sea, put a check mark in each box under the column in which the strategy or tactic falls.
  • Then in the large box, explain why your group believes it goes in this column.  Was it stated in the reading?  Did something in the reading cause you to make an inference?  If so, what was it?  Did you see it in a picture or read about it in a caption?  Use these questions as a guide to what to write in the category boxes.
  • When you finish box 1, your team needs to bring me your game card.  I will look over your response.
  • If it is correct, you get a box 2 key and your group may go on to box 2 following the same procedure above.
  • If it is incorrect, I will highlight what is correct.  Your team will need to work together to correct anything not highlighted and write the corrections on a post it note.  When you are done, you will place the post it on the unhi-lighted portion of the game card and resubmit it to me for review.  If it is correct, you will get your box 2 key and you will continue.  If you do not get it correct, you will have to go back and keep working until it is correct.
  • The first team to correctly and completely fill out the game card wins.

Rules

  • You may not go to the next box until you receive a key from me.  If you do, your team will lose 25 points.
  • You may not talk with other teams or get help from another team.  If you do, your team will lose 25 points.
  • All teams must finish the game board.  If you goof off in class, the game will become individual homework that you will have to complete before the next portfolio check on your own.

Game Points - Activity Grade

The points will be awarded as follows:
  • 1st Place:  100 Points
  • 2nd Place:  98 Points
  • 3rd Place:  96 Points
  • 4th Place:  94 Points
  • 5th Place:  92 Points
  • 6th Place:  90 Points
