UNIT MISSION

Just as a reminder, the unit mission is below.  This is our final goal for the unit.  To meet this goal, each lesson will have targets that you must meet in order to make this goal.  The live action role play lesson is this first lesson in the World War I unit.  The LARP targets are listed below the mission.

MILITARISM

Militarism is the belief or the desire of a government or a people that a country should maintain a strong military and be prepared to use it aggressively to defend or promote national interests.  Militarism involves doing whatever it takes to have the best military with the best training using the best technology.

Rise of the Empires

​There was great unrest on the planet of Armythia.  The eight major nations on the planet of Armythia had been competing to create empires by taking over many of the smaller and weaker areas of Armythia.  They turned these areas into colonies and exploited the natural resources to help build their empires.  

An especially strong rivalry developed between Barnock and Calleaux that centered around the Great Forest Region on their borders.  

Calleaux was also involved in a major disagreement with Zydor over the mouth of the Makeshift River.  Calleaux currently maintains control over the area.

Aratu is a new nation.  It had once been part of Zydor, but had gained its independence peacefully under Zydor's previous government.  Zydor's new government wants to regain control over Aratu but the Zydorian government has taken no action in taking Aratu back as of yet.

A small nationalistic group in Zydor has developed and is demanding that the government retake Aratu.  It is suspected that this group has been leading border raids against Aratu.

Evershire has been somewhat successful in keeping out of some of the disagreements because their nation is an island that is isolated from the other nations by water.  

It is common knowledge that Zydor has the most powerful army on the continent of Imperia and Evershire is the strongest naval power.

Fearing war and take over, the nations of Armythia begin forming alliances to help themselves.  This fear is fueled by the Newspaper tycoons in each of the six nations that have been carrying on feuds with each other.  Their feud turns the nations' fear into hate.

Each major nation on Armythia is extremely nationalistic.  Citizens feeling such pride for their own nations, they give complete power to their government officials, along with their undying support and their unwavering loyalty.  

Fear and hatred between nations fueled an arms race where nations competed to build the strongest militaries with the most advanced and most destructive weapons.

Reyden is troubled by domestic unrest and the government is no longer stable.  Unemployed workers and peasants are banning together and planning a revolution.

Yatween adopted an isolationist policy.  They have vowed to stay out of wars and conflicts with other nations but other nations see this as weak and begin to target this land full of natural resources!

Beyfor maintains a strong but small army and waits as other nations make decisions regarding their militaries and territories before making any major decisions for their nation.

Greed, tension, fear, and hate have engulfed the planet like a heavy gas.  It would only take one wrong move...one wrong action... to spark a brutal, devastating, and catastrophic war!

Building Forces

Time to Complete:  Whole Group Activity - 30 minutes
The eight major nations of Armythia have realized that to gain power and prestige, a nation must have a vast, strong, well trained, military that is well equipped with the latest weapons and technology.  So, all the major nations have entered into an arms race.  An arms race is a when two or more nations compete to have the best armed forces, weapons, and military technology.  In Challenge 4, you will play a game called Building Forces to simulate this arms race.  The military forces, weapons, or technology that you gain or lose in the game will be added or subtracted from what you currently have.  Follow along as I read the directions to the game and go over the game contents below.

Instructions
  1. To begin, the teacher gives each nation 1 army token, 1 navy token, 1 air force token, 1 technology token, and 1 weapons token.
  2. Next, the teacher gives 1 Army Man moving piece to each nation.  
  3. The teacher will have the presidents from each nation come up and draw a slip of paper from a container.  The paper will have a number.  The number will determine the order of players during the game.
  4. Each nation will take turns having a member of their nation to come up and spin the spinner during their turn.  Groups will send nations up in this order, Presidents, Secretaries, Chiefs of Staff, and Ambassadors.
  5. On your turn, you will spin the spinner and move your army man that number of spaces.  
  6. Do whatever the game board instructs you to do.  If you land on a draw a breaking news card space, read the card and follow the instructions.  Give the card to the teacher and she will keep up with each nation's winnings and losses.
  7. If any nation goes into debt, the teacher will track the debt using a debt card.
  8. The game ends when all the Breaking News Cards are gone or all of the tokens have been claimed by a nation.
  9. At the end of the game, I will give you a listing of what to add to your militaries in your National Intel Packets.​

One More Thing
If you read or hear a term from a Breaking News Card that you do not know, look in the tool box.  The weapons, technology, and military terms are all there and will be the vocabulary words in your Challenge 4 Chronicles!

Challenge 4 Lesson Chronicles Directions:  This goes behind your Challenge 3 Lesson Chronicles.  Don't forget to put your name on the handout.  Write Challenge 4 Chronicles in your Table of Contents.  Challenge 4 Chronicles are worth 50 points.  You will first complete the vocabulary terms for the Challenge.  At the end of the challenge you will answer the questions about what you learned in today's Challenge.  If you should lose the copy I give you in class, you can print out another copy at home by clicking on the link in the toolbox.

If you do not finish the Chronicles in the designated class time it becomes homework.  Remember, I will check each group's National Intel Packets and every student's Lesson Chronicles on Friday.

Challenge 4 Terms

air force: the branch of a nation's military that battles in the air

alliance: an agreement between nations to work together for a common goal or to defend each other in the event of war

ammunition:  the bullets or shells shot from a weapon

arms race:  when two or more nations compete to have the best armed forces, weapons, and military technology

army:  the branch of a nation's military that battles on land

arsenal: 
a collection of weapons and military equipment stored by a nation

assassinated:  to kill a famous or important person usually for political reasons

bayonet:  a large jagged knife that attached to the end of a rifle barrel in order to turn the rifle into a thrusting weapon

caltrops: a spiked metal device thrown on the ground to blow out the tires on wheeled vehicles

depth charge:  a weapon designed to destroy a submarine 

disarmament:  reducing the size of a nation's military or weapons

battleship: an armored warship mounted with weapons and guns

Gatling gun: a machine gun that has six barrels mounted in a revolving frame

grenade:  a small bomb thrown by hand or launched by a machine

howitzer:  a large gun that is used to fire shells high into the air for a short distance

influenza:  also known as the flu - a common illness that is caused by a virus and that causes fever, weakness, severe aches and pains, and breathing problems

intelligence task force:  a group of people who work together to gather information or solve a problem

maneuvers: a large-scale military exercise of troops, warships, and other forces

marines:  the highly trained branch of a nation's military that specializes in combat on land and sea

mine: a bomb that is placed in the ground or in water and that explodes when it is touched

mobilization: bringing together military forces to prepare for war

mortars:  a short light cannon used to shoot shells high into the air

navy: the branch of a nation's military that battles at sea

propellors:  the blades on an airplane that rotate to make the plane fly

stockpiled:  to store up a pile of something to use in an emergency, at a planned time, or at a later time

submarine:  a warship that battles under the ocean and is usually armed with torpedoes

surplus: the amount of something left over when all that is needed of it is used 

surveillance balloons:  balloons with cameras attached that fly over enemy territory and take pictures in order to gather information

torpedo:  a cigar-shaped missile designed to be fired from an airplane, ship, or submarine to explode on reaching a target

tuberculosis:  a bacterial disease that effects the lungs and causes a person to have breathing problems, chest pain, and to cough up blood 

typhoid:  a bacterial disease that causes a person to break out in red spots on the chest and abdomen and have severe stomach and intestinal problems
