CREATING NATIONALISM

Nationalism is feeling loyal and proud of your nation and believing your nation is better and more important than other nations.  As national leaders, you want your nation to be the best nation in the whole world.  The first thing you have to do to make a nation great is to believe that your nation is great!  In this portion of the LARP, each table of national leaders will work to promote nationalism within their countries.  You want to motivate devotion and loyalty in your citizens.  To do this, you need symbols of nationalism.

National Flags
Time to Complete:  Small Group Activity - 15 minutes
Directions:  The first thing you will do to create a sense of nationalism in your nation is to design a flag.  You will use an online tool called Scrontch's Flag Designer to do this.

On the Secretary's computer, click on the Flag Maker icon below.  Every other member of the group will use their computers to follow the picture tutorial and flag making directions below to complete your national flag.

Presidents will lead decision making by holding a vote for all decisions.

Presidents:
  • Lead the group in determining the promise you want the nation to make.

STEP 2:  Writing Pledges
Now you need to write your pledge.  Look at the slideshow below, to see examples of different national pledges.  Think about your brainstorm and the promises you felt were important that your citizens make to the nation.  Use your brainstorm, promises, and the examples below to type out your formal pledge in a Pages Document.
Example Pledges
Secretaries:  You will type the pledge on your computer.  All other group members will follow the directions here for the activity.   You all will guide the Secretary in creating a Pages Document and writing the Pledge.

Promotional Posters
Time to Complete:  Small Group Activity - 30 minutes
Directions:  The next thing you will do to promote nationalism in your nation is to create a promotional poster.  A promotional poster is a poster or flyer that uses images, slogans, or quotes to encourage support for a thing or idea.  In your small groups, you will work together to come up with your own slogan and design your own poster.  You will use Keynote on your Macbook Airs to create the poster.

STEP 1:  Determining the Themes for Your National Image
Presidents:  You need to lead the group in establishing your national image.  A national image includes all the characteristics that your citizens want other nations to think of when they think of your nation.  At this point, your group needs to determine what type of image you want for your nation.

Ask your group:
"How do we want our people to view our nation?"
"How do you want other nations to see your nation?"

Tell your group:

Below is a list of ideas to help get us started on a "national image."  We can use these ideas or our own.  We may also use several different ideas on one poster.  These are the same ideas used to write our pledges, but we can use different ones on our promotional poster if we want to.  Everyone needs to pick a few of their favorite themes.  We will hold a vote the same way we have done in the past to determine the main themes of our poster.

Tell your group:

We need to come up with a slogan now.  Below are examples of National Slogans.  We can use these for examples for inspiration, but we must come up with our own slogan.

Ask your group:
Look at the examples.  Use these posters as inspiration.  Can you think of a slogan using our themes?  Everyone come up with at least one slogan.  When everyone is finished, we will read them all.  We can either vote on one or combine several ideas to form one we all like.
