YES!

All these devices send and receive information. A device that sends or receives information is called a digital device.

ACTIVITY 1:  PARTS OF A LAPTOP COMPUTER

Picture
A laptop and tablet are two types of digital devices because they both send and receive information.
You use the keyboard on a computer to input information and the tracking pad to send the information out.  When you use a program or the internet, you are receiving information.  So, when you input your username and password into a laptop device, it is like a key.  You are entering information that will unlock your accounts and allow you to receive information from Apps or the Web.

Picture
Each one of you will receive the handout below.  Cut out the labels and glue them where they go on the diagram of the laptop.

ACTIVITY 2:  PARTS OF A TABLET

Picture

Just like a computer, when you type into a touchscreen on a tablet you are sending information and when you use an app or the internet on a tablet, you are receiving information.

Just like on a computer, this means when you input your username and password into a tablet, it is like a key.  You are entering information that will unlock your accounts and allow you to receive information from Apps or the Web
Now you are going to learn about the parts of a tablet.  Each person will get a sheet like the one below.  Cut out the labels and glue them to where they should go on the diagram.

ACTIVITY 3:  YOU'VE GOT THIS!

Now let's do an activity that will help you understand how digital devices work.

  • When you clicked on your name, you told your computer to bring up your username or your account.
  • Do you see your name in the middle now?  The computer did its job.
Picture
Picture

  • Very carefully open your computer.
  • Find your name in the right panel of the screen.
  • When I use the tracking pad to click on my name, what information is the tracking pad sending to the computer?
  • Click on your name now.
Picture

  • Now, type in your passwords and use your tracking pad to click on the arrow.
  • When you type in your password, what information is the computer receiving from the keyboard and tracking pad?

  • You used your password as a key to unlock your account.  Only you have this key so only you should be able to unlock your account.
  • Now your computer has been told to open your Clever Dashboard.
Picture
Picture

  • When you unlocked your account, your computer remembers the passwords that you ask it to remember.
  • Your account has been told to remember your Clever Login.
  • So, you should only have to click on sign in to go to the Dashboard.
  • Now that we have logged in, it is time to learn how to use inputting devices to log out of our accounts.
  • First, you need to tell the computer to close out of the application.
  • What input devices will you use to close out of the application?
  • How will you do it?
Picture
Picture

  • So when you used your tracking pad to click on the X, you told the computer that you wanted to close the Clever Dashboard.
  • But you are not done.  How do you lock the door of your computer when you stop using it, so that no one else can get into your account?

  • You know that you have locked the door when you click on the sign out button.
  • Your screen will have your account name pulled up, but anyone who wants to enter it, would have to unlock it with the key or password to enter.
