​After seeing the slideshow, can you tell me anything about graphic designers?
What do you think graphic designers would need to know to be good at their jobs?
Graphic Designers create all kinds of things from billboards, to animations, to tickets for the movies.  

You have probably seen the olympics on T.V.  Every two years, athletes from around the world meet to complete in all kinds of games.  
The athletes are not the only ones who have to work hard.  Graphic designers work to create the tickets, apps, posters, mascots, and logos for every city that hosts Olympic Games. 
One thing the Graphic Designers for the Olympics created is logos.  Why do they need logos at the Olympics?

​HOW DO GRAPHIC DESIGNERS USE TECHNOLOGY TO DO THEIR JOBS?

Drawing tools are objects, media, or computer programs, which can be used to design.  These tools allow graphic artists to design products for companies and events, such as the Olympics.  
One type of drawing tool is Google Drawings.  Click on the icon below to go to Google Drawings.  Do not do anything until I tell you to.
Now you will learn how to create shapes and use colors in Google Drawings.  I am going to show you how to add a feature to a google drawing.  Watch very closely and listen very well to how I do it.  When I tell you to, you will try this on your own.

We will go over these things.
  1. Name the Google Drawing.
  2. Change the background color.
  3. Insert a shape.
  4. Change the color of the shape.
  5. Add another shape.
  6. Change the color of the shape.
  7. ​Insert a picture.
  8. Add a textbox and type in the textbox.
  9. Share the drawing.

THE SCENARIO - NOW YOU ARE THE GRAPHIC DESIGNERS!

​You and your shoulder partner are partners in a graphic design firm.  The 2022 Winter Olympics Committee is looking for a graphic design firm to design a logo for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.  You both really want to get this job.  The committee gave a list of things that they are looking for in a logo.  Together with your partner, you are going to create a logo with all of these things and submit it to the committee.  The firm with the best logo will win the job and be the Official 2022 Olympics Graphic Designers.
K - 3rd GRADE SCENARIO INSTRUCTIONS
  1. You and your shoulder partner will work together.  
  2. You need to talk about all your decisions and help each other.  It is important not to argue.  The committee doesn’t want to hire a firm whose partners do not work together.
  3. I will give each person in your firm a number.  You will take turns doing tasks.  
  4. When I call for Designer 1, the person with the "1" card will do the task.  
  5. When I call for Designer 2, the person with the "2" card will do the task.  
  6. If you have three people in your group, I will call for Designer 3, the person with the "3" card will do the task.  
  7. Designer 1:  Open up a new Google Drawing.  Type your name in the name box and then type a space.
  8. Designer 2:  Type your name in the name box and then type a space.
  9. Designer 3:  Type your name in the name box and then type enter. 
  10. Designer 1:   Right click on the square.  Select change background.  Talk with your partner about the background color.  Click the color you agreed on to change the background color.
  11. Designer 2:  Click on the add shape icon.  Look at all the different shapes with your partner.  Talk with your partner about what shape you want to add.  Click the shape you agreed on.  Your cursor will change to a +.  Move it to where you want the shape to start.  Press the left portion of the mouse and drag the + down and to the right to create the shape.  Stop pressing the button when your shape is the size you want.
  12. Designer 1 in Pair Groups or Designer 3 in Trio Groups: Make sure you are clicked on the shape.  Click on the fill with color icon.  Talk with your partner about the shape color.  Click the color you agreed on to change the color of the square.
  13. Designer 2 in Pair Groups or Designer 1 in Trio Groups:  Click on the add shape icon.  Look at all the different shapes with your partner.  Talk with your partner about what shape would be good to layer over the other shape.  Click the shape you agreed on.  Remember, your cursor will change to a +.  Move it to where you want the shape to start.  Press the left portion of the mouse and drag the + down and to the right to create the shape.  Stop pressing the button when your shape is the size you want.
  14. Designer 1 in Pair Groups or Designer 2 in Trio Groups:  You will change the color of the layered shape.  Make sure you are clicked on the layered shape.  Click on the fill with color icon.  Talk with your partner about the shape color.  Click the color you agreed on to change the color of the square.
  15. Designer 2 in Pair Groups or Designer 3 in Trio Groups:  Click on the add text icon.  Your cursor will change to a +.  Move it to where you want the shape to start.  Press the left portion of the mouse and drag the + down and to the right to create the shape.  Stop pressing the button when your shape is the size you want.  Talk with your partner about where you think your text will look best.  Drag your shape there.  
  16. Designer 1 in Pair Groups or Designer 1 in Trio Groups:  Click inside the text box.  You will see a cursor flashing.   You will type 2022 Beijing Olympics.  I am going to spell it out for you now.  Listen and type what I tell you to.  Everyone must be very quiet so they can hear.  Type in 2 - 0 - 2 - 2; (Space bar); B - E - I - J - I - N - G ; O - L - Y - M - P - I - C - S.
  17. Designer 2 in Pair Groups or Designer 2 in Trio Groups:  Highlight the words you typed by double clicking on the words.  Go to the font size icon.  Choose a larger number.  Talk to your partner and decide how large the words need to be.  Choose big numbers to make the words bigger and small numbers to make the words smaller.
  18. Designer 1 in Pair Groups or Designer 3 in Trio Groups:  Highlight the words you typed by double clicking on the words that you made bigger or smaller.  Go to the font style icon.  Talk with your partner about the style you want to use and select that font.
  19. Designer 2 in Pair Groups or Designer 1 in Trio Groups:  Highlight the words you typed by double clicking on the words that you changed the style for.  Go to the A icon.  This icon changes the color of the words.  Talk with your partner about the color you want to change the words to and select that color.
  20. Designer 1 in Pair Groups or Designer 2 in Trio Groups:  You will now insert a picture.  Click on the black icon with two mountains.  This is the image icon.  The second choice will say find an image on the web.  Select this.  In the box type in the word ball.  I will spell it.  B - A - L - L.  A bunch of different sports balls will appear.  Talk with your partner about the one you want to add.  Click on it and then click the insert Botton at the bottom on your screen.
  21. Designer 2 in Pair Groups or Designer 3 in Trio Groups:  You will now adjust the picture. Move the image to put it where you want it.  Put your cursor on the top right hand outline box.  The cursor will change to an arrow.  Pull the little box down towards the bottom left to make the image smaller.  Pull the little box up towards the top right to make the image bigger.  
  22. All Groups:  Talk with your partner about your logo.  Do you want to change anything?  Together decide what needs to be changed and change it.  If you can't figure out how together, ask another group until I can make it to your group.
  23. Designer 1 in Pair Groups or Designer 1 in Trio Groups:  You are now going to share your logo with me.  Click on the share button in the top right corner.  In the box, type in April.Smith.  A - P - R - I - L - . - S - M - I - T - H - Now stop.  
  24. All Groups:  In the box below where you typed, look for the april.smith that ends in org.  Click on it.  Now stop!  I will come around and make sure you clicked the right one. 
  25. Designer 2 in Pair Groups or Designer 2 in Trio Groups:  If I tell your group you have the right one, click the share button at the bottom.  
  26. All Groups:  Log out of your computers.
4th - 5th GRADE SCENARIO INSTRUCTIONS
4th - 5th GRADE LOGO REQUIREMENTS
  1. You and your shoulder partner will work together.  
  2. You need to talk about all your decisions and help each other.  It is important not to argue.  The committee doesn’t want to hire a firm whose partners do not work together.
  3. One of you needs to open up google drawings.  Type your name and your partner's name in the Untitled Drawings Box and press enter.
  4. Click on Share in the upper right corner.
  5. Type in your partner’s username (first name and 4 numbers).  
  6. Your partners’ user name and @trussvillecityschools.org will pop up. 
  7. Click on your partner’s account.
  8. Click share.
  9. Partners will open up CLEVER and go to their Google Drive.  You will see the Google Drawings Document there.  
  10. You are now sharing the document and can both work on it at the same time. 
  11. Work together to create the logo.  
  12. The logo requirements are below.​
  • Your logo must have a background color other than white.
  • You must have at least one colored shape.
  • You must have one image inserted into the drawing.
  • You must have text with a style font other than Arial.
  • Your text must be at least 50 Font.
  • Your text must be a color other than black.
  • You must have two features layered.  Examples:  You could have text on top of an image or shape; shapes on top of other shapes; or an image onto of a shape.
  • Beijing 2022 Olympics must be on the logo.

​​HOW DO GRAPHIC DESIGNERS MAKE MONEY?

Companies and organizations that need graphic design work will often go to several graphic design firms and tell them what they want.  Each design firm will submit a design to the company or organization.  The company or organization will select the design of the firm they like the best and that design firm is the one that gets the job and the pay.  
I am going to be the 2022 Beijing Olympics Committee.  I will look at the logos each of you submitted.  Together as a group, we will determine whether or not the group met the criteria.  Then, we will vote on the one we want to be the winner.

Now, student team will get (10) $50 bills in fake money.  Let’s pretend everyone was part of the winning firm.  They paid you $500. It cost you $100 to make the design because you had to buy ink and paper and pay yourselves.  You can’t count this money in what you made on the design because you will have to go and buy more supplies to replace the ones you used in this design. If I take away the amount of money that it cost to make my design from the amount they paid me, I get my profit.  The profit is the real amount of money I made because I have to account for the money it took to make what they asked for.  So if it cost you $100 to make the design and they paid you $500, what was your profit, or the real amount of money that you made?  ​
