ELECTRICAL ENGINEERS

Electrical engineers study and design devices and equipment that use electricity. Today you are going to be an electrical engineer. Have you ever thought about how toy light sabers are made? Let's investigate this together.

Guiding Question

How do toy manufacturers make lightsabers?

It Is All About Circuits

In today’s lesson, you will learn how toys are powered with electric circuits.

Terms to Know

circuit:  a complete path around which electricity can flow

open circuit:  a break along the circuit line that causes the current to stop (off)

closed circuit:  when there are no breaks in the circuit line allowing electric current to flow

conductor:  a material in which electricity can flow through

Light Emitting Diode:  (LED) or a bulb that emits light when energy flows through it

Today's Challenge

You have been given a Lightsaber Construction Kit.  Watch the video below on constructing an LED Lightsaber.  Follow the directions to construct your saber.  Think about what you learned about circuits.

Reflection

  1. What is the power source in your toy lightsaber?
  2. Describe how the circuit works in your lightsaber.
  3. Explain what happens with the circuit when you turn your light saber on and off.
