LESSON 1: THE STEM LAB 411

Picture

LESSON MISSION

Picture
  • I can tell you the policies, procedures, and rules of STEM Lab.

WHAT DO YOU KNOW?

Picture

Every classroom from kindergarten through college has policies, procedures and rules.  Why do you think this is?  Turn to your shoulder partner.  Take turns telling each other your opinion on why we have policies, procedures, and rules.  Listen carefully to what they say.  If I call on you, you will have to tell me what your partner said.

INSTRUCTION

Follow along in the slideshow below as we go over the STEM Lab Policies, Procedures, and Rules.

TERMS TO KNOW
policy: guidelines or methods used to accomplish a goal

procedures:  the steps to complete a task

rules:  how to behave

consequence:  the result of an action or a choice

positive consequences:  good things that happen as the result of an action or choice

negative consequences:  bad consequences that happen as a result of an action or choice

respect:  treating others the way you want to be treated

ACTIVITY

The policies, procedures, and rules of the STEM Lab are similar to most other classes at Cahaba Elementary but it is still a lot to remember.  To help you apply what you learned, let's practice some scenarios.  I will read each scenario below to the class, then you will vote on the answer you think is correct.  You are not to go on without us.  Each question has a special code to answer.  You can't answer until I give you the code.

Be ready to discuss why you chose your answer and what policy, procedure, or rule helped you make this decision.
The teacher is giving instructions for a STEM Lab assignment and you are sure you already know how to do the assignment. What do you do?
Code:
Stand up and yell, "I already know how to do this!"
Go ahead and start on the assignment.
Wait until she is finished giving instructions just to make sure.
Start giving your neighbors instructions on how to do the assignment.

You are working on a group assignment with 3 others in your group. One person in the group is telling about his big home run hit over the weekend. What should you do?
Code:
Say, "That's so cool, but we need to be working on our assignment right now. Tell me about it at recess."
Let the other two people in the group finish the assignment and listen to your friend's home run story.
Go to the teacher and report that someone in the group is not doing their work.
Tell the person that you hate baseball and home runs are stupid.

Over the weekend your parents bought you a new Chromebook. You can’t wait to tell Mrs. Smith about it. Should you tell Mrs. Smith about it as soon as you enter the S.T.E.M. Lab?
Code:
Yes! Mrs. Smith will love to hear that I got a new Chromebook!
Yes! The beginning of class is a good time to tell her because we have not started working yet.
No! I should not tell her about this during class time unless I am asked to. I should tell her about it by writing a note and putting it in her mailbox.
No! Mrs. Smith does not have the time to hear about such nonsense.
Make your own survey
You are having trouble with the assignment that Mrs. Smith has given you. What should you do?
Code:
Find Mrs. Smith in the room, go up to her, and tell her you need help.
Yell out, "I need help, Mrs. Smith!"
Raise your hand and ask Mrs. Smith.
Ask a neighbor and if they can't help you, raise your hand and ask Mrs. Smith.
Do not do the assignment because it is a specials class and does not count for a real grade.

If you need to go to the restroom during STEM Lab but it is not an emergency, what should you do?
Code:
Get up quietly, ask a buddy to go with you, and go to the restroom.
Wait until it becomes an emergency, then raise your hand and ask Mrs. Smith to go.
Jump up and down and yell, "Mrs. Smith! I gotta go real bad!"
Don't ask to go during STEM Lab and if it becomes an emergency, just suffer in silence.

You bumped your elbow on the desk in your classroom and it still hurts a little when you come to STEM Lab. What should you do?
Code:
Ask Mrs. Smith to go to the nurse when you get to STEM Lab.
Tell your classroom teacher after it happens.
When your class goes to STEM Lab, you go to the nurse.
Don't bother a teacher unless it is bleeding or you are in so much pain, you might get sick.

During STEM Lab, the fire alarm goes off. What do you do?
Code:
Quietly and quickly get in a straight line and walk to the cafeteria.
Jump up and run around the room yelling, "FIRE!"
Everyone quickly get up and run out the side door of the library to the front of the school.
Quickly, get in a line at the library-STEM lab connecting door, wait for Mrs. Smith to get the safety bag and follow out the side library door.

What should you say or do, if someone gives a wrong answer or an answer that you disagree with?
Code:
Yell out, "What a dumb answer! Were you even listening?" Then tell your answer to the class.
Remember that being respectful is the most important rule in STEM Lab, and don't say anything. It would not be nice to say something because it might embarrass the other student.
Remember that one of the policies of STEM Lab is to challenge other students in class discussions and immediately tell the class your answer or opinion and explain why your answer or opinion is right and their answer or opinion is wrong.
Remember that your ideas and opinions in STEM Lab are all valued. Wait until the student is finished. Raise your hand and when called on, explain that you disagree, give your answer, and back up your answer with evidence.

Mrs. Smith has some new trinkets on her desk. You think one of them is a real fossil and you really want to see it. What do you do?
Code:
Write Mrs. Smith a note explaining that you noticed her new trinket and would like to see it closer and learn about it. Then put the note in her mailbox.
Go to her desk and pick it up to get a better look at the end of class so that it isn't disrupting everyone's learning.
Wait until Mrs. Smith is giving instructions and then sneak to her desk and get a closer look.
Don't ask about it. It is none of your business and is not to be touched at anytime.
