LESSON 7: PUBLIC VS. PRIVATE
LESSON MISSION
INTRODUCTION: A LITTLE GAMEToday we're going to start with a little game. For each statement that I read, if it is true about you, stand up. If it isn't true, stay seated. After each statement, look around to see who else is standing or sitting.
ACTIVITY 1: CLASS DISCUSSION |
TOOL BOXTERMS TO KNOW
public information: information that anyone can know because it has been made available to anyone who wants it
private information: information about you that can be used to identify you because it's unique to you personal information: information about you that cannot be used to identify you because it is also true for many other people hardwired: the way you a born or the way you were made |
You will now have 5 minutes to complete this activity. With your group answer the following question. Be ready to summarize your group discussion to the class.
What information did you learn during that activity?
What information did you learn during that activity?
ACTIVITY 2: DID YOU KNOW?
The purpose of that activity was to have some fun getting to know each other better. There are many situations where sharing information about yourself can be fun and positive. One of those situations is on the internet, where sharing your likes, opinions, and other personal information -- but not private information -- can be positive and fun.
In today's lesson, we're going to talk about being online -- and ways that you can share things about yourself that are fun and that connect you with others. We're also going to talk about ways that you can protect yourself so that you don't share more than you should.
What do you observe in the slide above? What's the main idea it's trying to show? Write your answer on the post it provided. When everyone in your group is finished, swap post-its. Did your group members have different ideas? Discuss what you believe to be correct. Be ready to share the answer you think is correct with the class and explain why you eliminated the other ideas as correct. Remember, you will have five minutes to complete the activity.
ACTIVITY 3: VIDEO CLIP
So there are lots of reasons to share information about yourself. However, not everything about you is okay to share. We're going to watch a short video about sharing online. As we watch, think about what information is okay to share, and which isn't. We will watch this video as a class, but I have embedded it here for you in case you want to watch it at home.
COMPREHENSION CHECK:
What type of information about you is okay to share? What type isn’t?
ACTIVITY 4: FIGURING IT OUT
Now, we’re going to play another little game. For each example that I say, decide whether it is private or personal. To decide, ask yourself, ‘Is this information that would also be true for many other people?’ If so, it is personal. If not, it is private. Answer the polls for each example below.
