LESSON 6: HARDWARE VS. SOFTWARE

Picture

THE LESSON MISSION

Picture

I can describe the differences between hardware and software.

ACTIVITY 1:  WHICH IS WHICH

Look at the following pictures.  With your shoulder partner make a list of all the things you think are software and all the things you think are hardware.

ACTIVITY 2:  THINK ABOUT IT

What characteristics do the items in your hardware list have in common?  What characteristics do the items on your software list have in common?  With your shoulder partner, write the characteristics shared by hardware next to your list of hardware.  Write the characteristics shared by software next to your list of software.

ACTIVITY 3:  EXPLORE IT

Watch the video below.

ACTIVITY 4:  EVALUATE IT

After you watch the video, look at your list of software and hardware.  Do you think you and your partner got the items in the right list.  Why or Why Not?  Discuss this with your shoulder partner.
Now discuss if the characteristics you both listed for your hardware and software were correct?  If they were correct, what part of the video confirmed that these characteristics were correct?  If you were incorrect, what part of the video confirmed that you were not correct?
If you had to define hardware and software for the grades under you, what would you say?  Based on all that you have learned, write a definition for each term with your partner that you think kids younger than you would understand.
