The planet of Armythia could be described as a keg of gunpowder.  Every nation on the planet was very nationalistic.  The citizens of each nation felt proud and developed a strong sense of loyalty and devotion for their country.  Eight major nations rose to world power status quickly.  Rivalries developed between these nations to be the most powerful and most important.  The leaders of these nations took advantage of their citizens' loyalty to promote causes that would help them rise to the top.  The feelings of pride and loyalty melted away into feelings of superiority and avarice.  Leaders would stop at nothing to make sure their nation was viewed as the most powerful nation on the planet.  So, to prove their superiority the eight major nations adopted the policy of militarism and engaged in a brutal race to develop the best militaries.

Soon, merely having a strong military that was well equipped with the best weapons and latest technology, was not enough to establish your nation as a world power.  So, the eight major nations adopted the policy of imperialism and began using their vast, strong militaries to take over smaller and weaker nations.  One by one, nations on the continents of Dunsway and Lortawan were claimed without any regard for the people living there.  The eight major nations exploited these weaker nations' natural resources and established grand empires.

As the eight empires carved up the continents of Dunsway and Lortawan, rivalries between the 8 empires grew intensely.  Bitter feuds arose when two or more empires wanted to conquer the same nation.  When empires were unable to conquer the nations in Dunsway and Lortawan they had hoped to, they started targeting other empires.  When a Zydorian extremist faction raided Aratu and won back land for Zydor, an international crisis began.  Newspaper companies, overly eager to capitalize on the situation, exaggerated, the already delicate crisis, and announced to the world that Zydor had troops mobilized on their borders with Calleaux and Reyden.  The newspapers' yellow journalism turned an already tense situation into a hostile one.

Tension over the crisis led the empires to form alliances with each other and against each other.  Nations who shared a common enemy or felt threatened by the same nation formed defensive alliances, where they both agreed to defend the other should one be invaded.  Greedy empires formed offensive alliances together, where they agreed to attack an empire together and split the winnings.  If an empire knew they were a target of an invasion, they would find another empire that was also a target and form a counter offensive alliance.   In a counter offensive alliance, the empires who felt threatened would combine their forces and attack the threatening empire before it could invade either.  Some empires were able to keep out of the feuds but wanted one side in other empires' feuds to win, so they formed trade alliances.  In a trade alliance an empire would provide another empire with the money, products, and natural resources that were needed to fight a war as a loan or in return for land after the war, but did not agree to help them fight.

A couple of empires realized the devastation that could happen if they remained on their current path, so they chose neutrality.  Neutral nations do not fight in wars and do not take sides in wars between others.  One empire even adopted the policy of isolationism.  This empire has decided not to involve themselves in any foreign affairs but do plan on attending the world summit just to stay informed of any potential threats.

Now, the 8 empires are meeting at the World Summit in Thal to discuss the current conflict and assess their positions in the conflict.

THE WORLD SUMMIT

Each nation will read their national position papers to the whole class at the world summit.  Be careful not to read your foreign policy.  This is secret!
President of Thal:  I now call to order the official World Summit in Thal.  At this time we invite the presidents of each empire to come and express their proposals to the other empires.  We will go in the following order:
  • Aratu
  • Zydor
  • Barnock
  • Beyfor
  • Calleaux
  • Evershire
  • Reyden
  • Yatween
Will the president of Aratu now come forward to state their proposal?

From: United Press International
DATELINE:
 Assassination

The International Press has learned that the Crowned Prince and Grand Dutchess of Zydor were assassinated by an Aratuian extremist faction while they were touring Zydorian territory on the Zydor-Aratu border.  The Crowned Prince and his wife the Grand Dutchess were known for being sympathetic to the native Aratuian people living in this section of Zydor.  They had planned a trip to talk with the people there to see how they could work out the current conflict.  The Crowned Prince was the heir to Zydor's throne.  His wife was pregnant with what would have been their fourth child.

The Aratuian government has arrested the assassin and many members of the Aratuian extremist faction involved.  They are currently in jail and are awaiting punishment.  Aratuian officials have publicly denied any involvement in the assassination and wish to meet with Zydorian officials to offer their sincere condolences.  The Crowned Prince and Grand Dutchess leave behind three children, ages 6, 4, and 2.

Zydor's officials are outraged.  They do not know whether to believe Aratu or not.  Their decision to declare war could possibly throw the whole world into war.  The fate of Armythia hangs in the balance!

THE DOMINO EFFECT

Follow along and listen as I read to you about the Domino Effect.
Picture
A domino effect is when one event sets into motion a chain of similar events where each event is triggered by the previous event.  Zydor's decision to declare war or to work out a peace agreement will create a domino effect.  Their action will cause other nations to make decisions and those nations' decisions will trigger even more nations' decisions.  In the next portion of the LARP.  Zydor will declare their intent by saying that they declare war or want to establish peace.  I will gather each nations' alliance agreements, militarism packets, imperial conquests, and foreign policies from previous lessons and use them to determine the course of events that occur.  Each part of your foreign policy will contribute to the outcome.

After Zydor announces their intent, I will read a specific portion of each groups' foreign policy as it pertains to the situation.  I will record the chain of events in a chain of events organizer online as they happen.  I will use the results from our militarism, imperialism, and crisis lessons in battles.  You will see how this works as the LARP plays out.

Challenge 8 is the reveal.  In Challenge 8, I will reveal the real nations each of your imaginary nations represented.   I will go over the real events that led up to and occurred during World War I.  You will then evaluate whether your outcome was the same as the real outcomes and analyze whether your decisions or the decisions of real World War I leaders were more beneficial.

During the course of the "war" you will hear a few "war" terms that you might not know.  These are listed in the toolbox to the right.  These will be on your test, so if you don't know them, study!
