ABOUT THE UNIT
Students will learn about Christmas in Columbia and will focus on the tradition of Dia de las Velitas. Dia de las Velitas kicks off the Christmas Season in many parts of South America, but especially in Columbia! It is celebrated 2 nights in early December. People light candles and lanterns in their homes, on balconies, porches, sidewalks, streets, parks, and squares. Towns and cities shoot fireworks and hold parades. Students in each grade level will create different types of luminary lanterns for Dia de las Velitas. If we can get these finished before the last day of our multicultural celebrations, students will get to participate in a Columbian Christmas Parade. We will light all the luminaries and line the halls with them. We will turn down the lights and line up the students in a parade format to travel down the halls to view the luminaries they all worked together to create.

BACK UP LUMINARIES
Students will do the luminaries below if we do not get all supplies for another type of luminary in on time or a student finishes their assigned luminary early. Students are welcomed to do these luminaries at home and bring them in for the Dia de las Velitas Parade currently scheduled for Thursday, December 19 at 1:00 PM.
