Lesson 6:  The Rings of Responsibility

Lesson 6:
The Rings of Responsibility

Picture

THE LESSON MISSION

Picture

I can be a responsible digital citizen.

CHALLENGE 1:  USING WHAT YOU KNOW

What do all of these pictures have in common?

The Lesson Tool Box

Picture
responsibility:  a promise or duty you have to yourself or others

community:  a group of people with a common background or shared interests

digital citizen:  a member of a worldwide community linked by the internet

CHALLENGE 2:  MAKING A CONNECTION

The pictures that you just looked at all had rings.  The rings all get larger and larger.  We use this idea of rings to illustrate responsibility.  Students have three rings of responsibilities.  They have a responsibility to self, a responsibility to family and friends, and a responsibility to the community.  Each ring represents a different person or group of people to which you have responsibilities.

Let's read about what each circle in the model represents.
Picture

Self

The center ring has to do with responsibilities students have to themselves, such as keeping themselves safe and healthy, and protecting their reputations.
Picture

Friends and Family

The middle ring stands for responsibilities students have to their friends and family, such as helping with chores, attending their performances, or just listening to them when they are having problems.
Picture

Larger Community

The outer ring stands for responsibilities to the larger community, from following rules at school to playing safely at the playground.

With your group, answer the following questions.  Make a list of your groups ideas to share with the class.
What responsibilities do you have to yourself?  In other words, how do you take care of yourself?

What responsibilities do you have to your friends and family?  In other words, how do you help take care of your friends and family?

What responsibilities do you have to your community?  In other words, how do you help to take care of your community?

CHALLENGE 3:  EVALUATING DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP

A digital citizen is a member of a worldwide community linked by the internet.  Digital citizens have responsibilities to themselves, their friends and family, and the larger community.
Now, let's evaluating the rings of responsibility.  You are going to complete a series of polls regarding online responsibilities.  Each poll will give a statement.  You must determine which ring the statement falls into on the Ring of Responsibility.  For example, if the poll read, “I never reveal my full name online,” you would select the innermost ring, the Ring of Self.  This is because people protect themselves by not revealing private information online.

I will read each poll aloud.  Answer honestly.  Do not worry about what your neighbor thinks.  We will go over the results after each poll.
