WEEK 1 - INTRODUCTION
WHAT IS INFRASTRUCTURE?
Look at the pictures below. What are some of the things you notice in these pictures? Do these pictures have anything in common?
All the pictures show things that people have built, things used to build, or things in the process of being built. There are many things a city needs to build so that people can live comfortably. Infrastructure is the word we use to describe all the things a city needs to build to support the people who live there.
You might remember that in kindergarten you learned there are many things people need to live in a city.

Tool BoxIMPORTANT WORDS
graph: a picture that shows information
Infrastructure: all the things a town or city needs for people to live there materials: things found in nature that people use to build things professional: a person who does a job using a special skill Skills: abilities that people have that others can't do without training STEM professional: a person who has a job doing science, technology, engineering, and math tools: items that people create to help them make and build things technique: a method or way of doing something. PROFESSIONS
mechanical engineer: peod.
millworker: people who install things inside a house or building mechanic: people who build and repair machines brick layer: people who build things with stones and bricks ironworker: people who build things with iron and steel plumber: people who install and repair pipes lather: people who install large tiles called dry wall |
LIVE ACTION ROLE PLAY TIME!
Last year, you learned that infrastructure is built by professionals using tools and materials. Remember, Professionals are people who do a job with special tools, materials and skills. Tools are items that people create to help them make and build things. Materials are things found in nature that people use to build things. Skills are abilities that people have that others can't do without training.
This year, you will learn about some of the techniques used to build infrastructure. A technique is a method or way of doing something. There are many techniques used to build structures and machines. |

WEEKS 2 - 9
PROFESSIONALS WHO BUILD INFRASTRUCTURE
Over the next 2 months, you will participate in a different LARP each week. With each larp, you will become a different STEM professional on your Star Wars planet who must build infrastructure using a special building technique. All the LARP scenarios are below.
WEEK 9
HOW DO PROFESSIONALS ANALYZE INFORMATION?
Professionals must collect and analyze information to do their jobs. This means they must look closely at the information and understand what it means. Today we will look at what you learned about infrastructure, collect information, and create a graph with the information we collected. A graph is a picture that shows information. Today we will create a bar graph. Bar graphs show the amounts of different things.
This is a bar graph that shows the numbers of students whose favorite colors are red, yellow, green, blue, orange, and purple. Let's look at the information together.
This is a bar graph that shows the numbers of students whose favorite colors are red, yellow, green, blue, orange, and purple. Let's look at the information together.
According to the graph....
If all of the students who voted are in one class, how many students are there in all?
- How many students like red?
- How many students like yellow?
- How many students like green?
- How many students like blue?
- How many students like orange?
- How many students like purple?
If all of the students who voted are in one class, how many students are there in all?
HOW DO PROFESSIONALS BUILD INFRASTRUCTURE?
Now, that you know how to read a bar graph, we will create one of our own. Think about the centers that you did. Take a moment to talk with you partner. What was your favorite center and why?
Now we are going to collect information in a tally sheet. Then we will record the information in a bar graph together.
Now we are going to collect information in a tally sheet. Then we will record the information in a bar graph together.
